House Training Puppies

Your new puppy looks really cute but how cute is it going to look when it leaves a trail of pee or dog poopies all over the new living room rug. These kinds of mishaps are going to happen every day once you bring a puppy home. Teaching your new puppy to go the bathroom outsides or on the stack of newspapers is going to take some work and time. There are several things you can do to help speed up the process and minimize the mishaps.

The most helpful thing you can do for your new puppy is to make a routine for them, Feed them the same times every day and the same portions. Time how often your puppy goes the bathroom so you know when they should be ready and then take them outside for the bathroom walk. Don’t play with the puppy until after they go, so they know that the walk is for serious business only. It will help to praise them after they go the bathroom and maybe give them a small treat. Another good time to always take them outside is immediately after they wake up after a nap or sleeping. Always walk the puppy in the same area so that they become well know with the scents of the area and comfortable.

Don’t punish the puppy for going the bathroom in the house an ample saying “NO or BAD” will do. Punishing a puppy for this will only make them afraid of you and not trust you. Some people will create an area for their dog to go the bathroom inside like a corner in the cellar or basement, doing this will only prolong the house training period. Young puppies cannot hold it in for more than a few hours depending on their age. If you will be away for more than this time period make arrangements to have someone walk the dog during the day for you.

Remember house training your new puppy will take some time and a lot of effort; consistency and patience will help you to achieve a well trained dog. Treat your puppy fairly and consistently so that they will understand exactly what you expect of them.
